1939 Boston Red Sox Multi-Signed First Day Cover w/Williams Rookie (PSA)

1939 Boston Red Sox Multi-Signed First Day Cover w/Williams Rookie (PSA)

Displayed is a June 12, 1939, First Day Cover that is multi-signed by the Boston Red Sox. In Cooperstown, New York, on the date of this First Day Issue, Major League Baseball celebrated the alleged 100th Anniversary of the "invention" of the game, in Cooperstown, by Abner Doubleday. Presently, the June 19, 1846, game in Hoboken, New Jersey between the New York Nine and the Knickerbockers is recognized as baseball's first game, but in truth, the consensus opinion is that baseball was never invented but instead evolved out of other bat and ball games, particularly rounders. In any event, the festivities of Baseball's Anniversary attracted national attention. All 11 living members of the Baseball Hall of Fame were present for the ceremonies, including Ty Cobb, who arrived late. In addition to Cobb, Connie Mack, Honus Wagner, Tris Speaker, Larry Lajoie, Cy Young, Walter Johnson, George Sisler, Eddie Collins, Grover Cleveland Alexander, and Babe Ruth attended. An exhibition game was played between two teams, featuring then-current Major Leaguers and managed by Eddie Collins and Honus Wagner. During the game, Babe Ruth made a special appearance for Wagner's team as a pinch-hitter and when he hit a pop up near first, the crowd yelled "Drop it" to Art Jorgens, who caught the ball and disappointed the fans who wanted Ruth to get another chance to hit a home run. United States Postmaster General Farley issued a 3-Cent Baseball Stamp for the occasion, and the little Cooperstown post office was mobbed with fans wanting to purchase the First Day Issue. The 4.5x10.25" envelope is stamped with the First Day issue and the postmark reads "COOPERSTOWN N.Y. JUNE 12 (9:00 A.M.)" Stamped on the front of the envelope is "CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF BASEBALL." Signing the envelope, in green ink from a fountain pen, are 21 Red Sox players and coaches from that season's second place AL team. Highlights include: Hall of Famer Ted Williams, a rookie in 1939, and a sensation who hit .327, with 31 home runs and 145 RBIs; Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx, who hit .360 that season, with 35 home runs and 105 RBIs; plus Hall of Famers Bobby Doerr, and Lefty Grove. Other notable signees: catcher/coach Moe Berg, a language expert was also a U.S. spy; Huff Duffy, a coach, who hit an amazing .440 in 1994. Other signatures include Tom Daly, Joe Vosmik, Jim Bagby Jr., Denny Galehouse, and more. The signatures of the manager/shortstop, Hall of Famer Joe Cronin, Roger "Doc" Cramer, and Elden Auker - plus one of the two Bobby Doerr signatures - are clubhouse. The envelope does show some foxing, a few minor stains, and some partial folds, but it is in overall very good condition. The signed First Day Cover comes with a PSA LOA. The multi-signed envelope has value through its noteworthy signatures and the First Day Issue for Baseball's Centennial.
