1939 Kayak II Hollywood Gold Cup Race Worn Horse Shoe Sterling Silver Ash Tray - New Track Record
Seabiscuit was Charles S. Howard’s more famous racehorse, but Kayak II also esteemed his stable. When Seabiscuit was scratched for an injury in the 1939 Santa Anita Handicap, it was Kayak II who Howard entered instead. Kayak II won that race along with several others and was named 1939 Champion Older Male Horse. This race-worn horseshoe, fashioned into an ashtray, comes from Kayak II’s win in the second running of the Hollywood Gold Cup in 1939. It is stamped “Sterling” on the bottom, and on the inside is engraved: “Worn by Kayak II, Winning, Hollywood Gold Cup, 1939, 1 1/4 M Time 2.02 2/3, New Track Record.”
