1940 Academy Award for Film Editing
Ann Bauchens was truly Hollywood's pioneering woman in the art of film editing. From 1918 to 1956, she was under exclusive contract to Cecil B. DeMille and edited all his films in those thirty-eight years. Sixty-two films in all, concluding with "The Ten Commandments". Not too shabby! Nominated for an Academy Award four times, she won her prize in 1940 for her work on "Northwest Mounted Police". The award for film editing in those early days was not the statuette we see today. In 1940, the award for Scientific and Engineering was the style we present here. The bronze tablet with the name of the award in raised lettering, and a representation of the Oscar statuette in bas relief to one side of the plaque. The award is handsomely set in a polished marble base (minor restoration) with the winner's name and art engraved on a plaque. A rare and important award from Hollywood's Golden Era.
