1940s "Jockeys' Guild" 14k Gold Horse Racing Ring

1940s "Jockeys' Guild" 14k Gold Horse Racing Ring

This size 7 jockey's ring is a scarce member's ring from this historic union, founded in 1940 by such legendary jockeys as Eddie Arcaro & Johnny Longden - this could be from one of the original members. The guild was organized to speak for jockeys who felt frustrated over the widespread misuse of power over the jockeys by very few powerful horsemen. Sympathetic to the needs of the riders, it began with secret meetings to discuss raising funds to assist injured riders and the families of jockeys fatally injured on the racetrack. Riders like Tommy Luther were blacklisted for attending these meetings, but the organization was finally launched in the wake of the racing injury of Sammy Renick.
