1944 World Series 5th Game Home Run Baseball

1944 World Series 5th Game Home Run Baseball

A vintage game ball from a World Series that saw the Browns and Cardinals face off in what was dubbed, "The St. Louis Showdown." WWII had a large effect on the outcome that year, many of the top players serving overseas for their country, and these two unlikely top teams were showcased on the world's stage. The offered baseball is a home run baseball, hit by Danny Litwhiler in the 8th inning of Game 5 at Sportsman's Park. The ball is inscribed in bold black ink on the panel: "Home Run World Series 1944, 8th inn. Fifth game. Cardinals vs. Browns, won 2-0, Danny Litwhiler." Only the inscription is shallacked for preserving and the ball itself (no visible stampings) is toned to a brown color.
