1945 Dummy Hoy Handwritten Letter - His All-Time Team! (PSA)

1945 Dummy Hoy Handwritten Letter - His All-Time Team! (PSA)

One-page handwritten letter, dated March 24, 1945, penned by William "Dummy" Hoy, who was one of the most well-known deaf players in Major League baseball history. In his letter, written in reply to a question posed by a Mr. Richard Rose, Hoy lists the best players at each position that he observed during his career (1886-1903). Hoy's "all-star" team consists of Tim Keefe and John Clarkson on the mound, Buck Ewing at catcher, Fred Tenney at first, Bid McPhee at second, Jimmy Collins at third, Honus Wagner at short, Mike Kelly in left, Bill Lange in center, and Ty Cobb in right. He selected Charles Comiskey as manager for his club. The letter, which is scripted in black ink, is not signed, but it comes with the accompanying mailing envelope postmarked "Mar 24 1945 Cincinnati Ohio." In his original mailing to Rose, Hoy did include a signed card, but it has since been separated from the letter (we have seen the card on two separate occasions when this letter was previously offered at auction). Hoy became deaf at the age of three following a bout with meningitis, but he never let his handicap deter him. He broke into the Majors in 1888 with the Washington Nationals and for the next fourteen seasons he was one of the top outfielders in the league, finishing his career with a .288 lifetime average. The letter (7x10.5") displays both horizontal and vertical mailing folds, as well as light creasing. In Excellent condition overall. The mailing envelope (6x3.5") is slightly toned and is also in Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA.
