1949 Bowman Wild West Original Artwork
In 1949 the Bowman Gum Company issued the classic "Wild West" series featuring beautiful color artwork capturing the spirit of the Old West. The exceptional color artwork and remarkable detail made this set a smash hit immediately. This gorgeous original artwork (5 x 6-1/8 inches) was used to make card #A-32 from the Wild West set. The image is called "Down Goes the Telegraph" and pictures an Indian brave putting his tomahawk to the telegraph wires while other braves in the background are setting fire to railroad ties. Beautifully executed and with extraordinary detail, the artwork is presented on thick cardboard stock, with clean borders save for the notation ‘A-32’ on the bottom right corner. The back is clean but shows several areas where the artwork was formerly affixed to a board or book page. The image itself presents as NM and the lot is accompanied by a pasteboard of the issued card, a clean EX example although o/c. Original artwork from this era is seldom seen, let alone in the condition presented here. Beautiful and rare; have it framed and enjoy it for years to come!
