1949 Chief Bender Signed Government Postcard (PSA)

1949 Chief Bender Signed Government Postcard (PSA)

Charles Albert "Chief" Bender is a Hall of Fame pitcher who was one of baseball's best hurlers in the 1900s and 1920s. Offered is a 1949 government issued postcard signed and notated by Bender. He was a Native American who essentially did all of his Major League pitching from 1903-1917. He made a cameo appearance in 1925 for the Chicago White Sox. Bender's lifetime record is 212-127, with a career 2.46 ERA. Bender pitched for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics (1903-14), the Federal League's Baltimore Terrapins (1915), the Philadelphia Phillies (1916-17), and the Chicago White Sox (1923). He was a major part of three Philadelphia Athletics' World Series victories, in 1910, '11, and '13. Overall, he pitched in ten World Series games, throwing complete games in all but one of the contests, and winning six times. On May 12, 1910, he threw a no-hitter for the Athletics against the Cleveland Indians. After his playing career, Bender had a long second career as a minor league manager and player-manager, a scout and a Major League coach. As an Athletics' pitching coach, Bender worked extensively with pitcher Bobby Shantz and helped Shantz to the 1952 AL MVP. The postcard measures 3.25x5.5". The card is postmarked September 12, 1949. The postcard has darkened because of the passage of time for well over a century. It is signed and notated by Bender in blue ink, all in his handwriting, with an 8/10 signature. The postcard has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO.
