1950's Baseball Autograph Collection
Meticulously compiled and preserved album of signatures from over a hundred prominent big leaguers of the '50s, on corresponding b&w and color pictures, postcards, team photos & letterheads, cut sheets, etc. Players are grouped in sections with team headings and include the likes of Mickey Mantle (cut sig. affixed to picture postcard), Jackie Robinson (cut sig. from GPC), Roy Campanella (reverse of a picture postcard), Ted Williams (picture postcard), Johnny Mize, Stan Musial (nice 5x7" photo), Ted Kluszewski (5x7" photo), Lefty Gomez, Bob Lemon, Early Wynn, Wally Post, Luke Easter, Phil Rizzuto, Billy Martin, Robin Roberts, Harry Simpson (picture postcard), Harvey Kuenn, etc. Other items include a typed letter from Leo Durocher on his personal stationery (with Leo and his young son in matching No. 3 uniforms) dated September 3, 1955, reading "Dear Gerald, You sure can have my autograph. Hope you will be rooting us in for the pennant" and a Walter Alston handwritten letter penned in 1954 in response to a fan's request for a photograph. The Cardinal section is especially intriguing, featuring identical team promo cards (beginning "Dear Friend") signed by sixteen players (Yuhas, Staley, Bilko, Presko, Ripulski, D. Sisler, Schoendienst (2), Castiglione, Moon, Haddix, Rice, Slaughter, Mizell, Hemus and Jablonski). Signatures range from 6 to 9, some NRMT. Signed materials are generally EX+, with many showing vintage tape residue around the edges. Impressive group conjures up memories of an era when people collected signatures for the innocent joy of hero worship.
