1950s Betty Page Coin-Operated 3D Peep Show Viewer
Outstanding piece came right out one of the gentleman’s clubs in London’s Soho during the naughty but discreet 1950s. This “Cabaret” machine is hung on a wall and has a viewer for you to look into. Lettering is figural metal and in painted gold. After you dispense the coin a giant wheel inside (kind of like a GAF Viewmaster) shows you a lovely three-dimensional image (using a full color slide) of a nude lovely of the period. Inside are many of the most famous glamour girls of the era (those that did nude work) including three images of Bettie Page. Metal front is all-white and has the look of an old time coin-op cigarette machine. There are “windows” on the front, the main one with a Vargas (?) girl in slinky garb with “3D Beauty Parade.” She is lovely. The top window reads, “Glamour Beauties” and “10 Beautiful Models in Color 3D Only…Insert Coin On Side 4…Different Series.” Style of the machine and its use is reminiscent of the 1960 British film <i>Peeping Tom </i>that destroyed filmmaker Michael Powell’s career. Great overall sanitary look to the machine cleanses the daring images inside and its use. Some wear to the images on the glass but the machine itself is in excellent condition and the images inside are perfect. European electrical set-up not working at the moment but it did a few years ago for the collector who owned it. Needs work and a simple converter. 27x24x6”.
