1951 Eddie Gaedel Game Program
Only a few precious copies are known to exist of this St. Louis Browns game program from August 19, 1951 commemorating if not one of baseball's greatest momments surely its funniest -- when Bill Veeck, pulling his most outrageous stunt, sent midget Eddie Gaedel up to bat. The 37", 65-pound entertainer had jumped out of a cake between games of the doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers, then, wearing number "1/8" pinch-hit in the bottom of the first inning and, with his microscopic strike zone, walked on four pitches before being yanked. Furious league officials then precluded any repeat of the farce, which has grown to legend status. The program's scorecard is filled in but only of the first game though it does list "1/8-Gaedel"on the Browns player roster. Best of all, the program is EX-MT, stunningly free of damage.
