1951 Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays World Series Debut Ticket Stub PSA VG-EX 4 (Only Two Higher)
It was on the afternoon of October 4th that future Hall of Fame immortals Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays made their World Series debuts in Game 1 of the 1951 World Series before 65,673 fans at Yankee Stadium. The Giants won 5-1 as Dave Koslo beat Allie Reynolds. Presented is a ticket stub from that historic game. In the previous day, the New York Giants had won entrance to the World Series though Bobby Thomson's dramatic three-run home run in the bottom of the 9th inning at the Polo Grounds in the final game of a three-game pennant playoff against the Brooklyn Dodgers. In the World Series opening game, rookie Mays batted seventh for the Giants and played center field, going hitless in five at bats. Mays batted .274 in the '51 regular season, with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs, and he was the NL Rookie of the Year. Willie was on his way to 24-All-Star game selections, 660 home runs, a .301 lifetime batting average, a pair of NL MVP Awards, and spectacular play in center field so wondrous that his 12 Gold Glove Awards do not do him justice. Fellow rookie Mickey Mantle was the lead-off hitter for the Yankees, and Mantle was hitless in three official at bats, but he did reach base twice, on walks. Mantle played right field because Joe DiMaggio, in his final season, still owned center field, although Mantle was the center field heir apparent. In Game 2 of the '51 World Series, the next day, Mantle almost collided with DiMaggio on a fly ball to right center, and in avoiding the Yankee Clipper, Mantle caught his spikes in an outfield drain and caused serious injury to his knee, never to be quite as fast, and injury free, again. Mantle hit .267 in '51, with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs, and he went on to become a 20-time All-Star, a 3-time AL MVP, a Triple Crown winner, a 7-time World Champion, and, with 536 home runs, the most round-trippers of any switch-hitter in history. The offered ticket stub measures approx. 2.25x4.25". The true vintage quality of the presented ticket stub is that it is for a bleacher seat, to the opening game of a New York City "Subway Series" for what seems like an outrageous bargain, just $1.00. The ticket stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded VG-EX 4.
