1951 National League 75th Anniversary Book Signed by Branch Rickey, Fred Clarke, Pie Traynor, Bill McKechnie and 15 Additional Members of the 1925 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates - Max Carey's Personal Copy! (PSA)
Hardcover book, titled "75th Anniversary of the National League" (edited by Charles Segar; Jay Publishing Co., 1951), signed on the interior by 21 former Major League players, including eighteen members of the 1925 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates (three of whom are Hall of Famers) and Branch Rickey. This book was Hall of Fame outfielder Max Carey's personal copy and was most likely signed at the National League's 75th Anniversary banquet held at Toots Shor's Restaurant in New York City on February 3, 1951. The name "Max" is written in blue ink at the top of the front flyleaf. Branch Rickey, who has inscribed the book "To Max Carey," while adding brief personalization (much of it illegible), has signed the book on the interior front cover, along with noted sportswriter Chilly Doyle. The remaining nineteen signatures all appear on the front flyleaf. Interestingly, each player who signed on the front flyleaf also included his home address. While only speculation, it was probably a request of Carey's so he could stay in touch with his old pals, all of whom were teammates of his on the 1925 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates (perhaps Carey was planning a reunion of the club and wanted to make sure he knew where to reach them). The nineteen signatures appearing on the flyleaf are those of Bill McKechnie, Pie Traynor, Fred Clarke, Charles "Babe" Adams, Vic Aldridge, Tom Sheehan, Fresco Thompson, John Gooch, Johnny Rawlings, Carson Bigbee, George Grantham, Jack Onslow, Eddie Moore, Ray Kremer, Emil Yde, Lee Meadows, John Morrison, Glenn Wright, and one other (illegible). The signatures, scripted in a variety of inks, are all boldly rendered and grade 9/10 or 10/10. The ninety-six page book displays moderate wear, including light foxing to some of the interior pages, and is in Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from PSA.
