1951 Oakland Oaks Team Signed Baseball w/Mel Ott (PSA)
Presented is a Wilson "Courtesy Oakland Oaks" baseball signed by 21 members of the 1951-52 teams, plus their manager, Hall of Famer Mel Ott. The Oaks were a popular long-time franchise in the Pacific Coast League, and they played home games at Oak Park. They were in the Pacific Coast league from 1903-55. The Oaks' main rivals were the cross-bay San Francisco Seals and often a double header would be played between the teams, with one game being in the morning on one side of San Francisco Bay and the second game a ferry ride that afternoon on the opposite side of the bay. Casey Stengel managed the Oaks, and so did Ernie Lombardi and Joe Gordon. The Oaks began the 1951 season with a new manager, Hall of Famer Mel Ott, the former slugger of the New York Giants, a man who crushed 511 home runs, the first national leaguer to do so. Ott used his unusual high leg kick to amass 2,876 hits. The Oaks had a new coach as well, George Kelly, another former New York Giant star. Ott managed the Oaks to a fifth-place finish in '51 and a second-place finish in'52. Signing the ball: Ott, on the sweet spot; Kelly; Bret Haus, Lloyd Christopher, Augie Galan, Don Pagett, Piper Davis, and others. Aside from moderate toning, the ball grades Near Mint. The signatures, however, have completely oxidized on the leather, leaving the signatures sepia-toned and averaging 8/9 of 10. The ball comes with a PSA LOA.
