1951 Vic Wertz Briggs Stadium All Star Game Award
The 1951 MLB All-Star Game was held on July 10th at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. The A.L. squad was managed by Casey Stengel, while the N.L All-Stars were skippered by Eddie Sawyer. Baseball legend and former Tigers star Ty Cobb threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Despite the setting, the N.L. roster outshined the A.L. stars, 8-3. A.L. outfielder Vic Wertz of the hometown Detroit Tigers launched a solo home run in the fourth inning to cut the score to 4-2, but the N.L. stars hit a total of four home runs to take the victory. You may recall that three years later, in Game 1 of the ‘54 World Series, Wertz (then playing for Cleveland) hit a long fly ball 400 feet to dead center that New York Giants outfielder Willie Mays caught, known as “The Catch.”This lot offers Vic Wertz’s 1951 All-Star Game award that he earned by virtue of being selected to play. Measuring 9” wide by 3” deep by 5” high, the four-pound piece features a high quality Chelsea clock on the left side with a similar-sized barometer on the right. The brown wooden base is engraved with the following text: “ALL STAR GAME, BRIGGS STADIUM - DETROIT, JULY 10, 1951, VIC WERTZ.” The award is in excellent-mint condition, although the clock may need some tuning to keep proper time.
