1953 Mickey Mantle Signed Letter to Autograph Seeker (JSA)

1953 Mickey Mantle Signed Letter to Autograph Seeker (JSA)

Displayed is a signed letter, dated July 30, 1953, by Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle in response to an autograph request. The letter is typed on official New York Yankee stationery (8.5x11"). The stationery shows "New York Yankees, Inc." in red at the top of the page, and under that is the red, white, and blue Yankees logo. The letter is addressed to Miss Marilyn Holt, from Smithfield, Ohio. The letter states, "Dear Marilyn, Thank you very much for writing and asking for my autograph. I know it is encouraging to know of your interest in me and the Yankees. I am pleased to give you my autograph by signing this letter. Sincerely, Mickey Mantle." The body of the letter is a pre-typed fan letter response. The great Yankee slugger signed his name by using blue ink from a ballpoint pen. Mantle was in his third year with the Yankees in 1953, and he hit 21 homers and drove in 92 runs, hitting .295. The Yankees went on to defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers to win the '53 World Series. Mantle would hit 536 home runs, the most ever by any switch-hitter, and he became one of the most famous baseball players in history. The letter comes with a JSA Letter of Authenticity which states, in part, "This one-page letter on New York Yankee stationery ... is signed with a vintage early signature of a young Mickey Mantle. The signature is mint. This early signature is by far the most desired by collectors, but they are rare and more desired by collectors than the 'looping M' signatures he switched to later in his career and on into retirement.... A mint sample of a very desirable vintage Mantle who was only 21 years of age when he signed." The letter has been triple-folded, and it has a few tiny smudges, but it is in overall excellent condition. The early Mantle signature makes a fine addition to any collection.
