1953 Ty Cobb "Alchoholism" Letter to Eddie Mathews (PSA)

1953 Ty Cobb "Alchoholism" Letter to Eddie Mathews (PSA)

Handwritten two-page letter from Ty Cobb to future, fellow Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews in his sophomore year in the show. Green ink beauty is dated 9/17/53 on Ty Cobb's familiar letterhead. It is signed twice, once a full signature and then "Ty" on bottom of page two. Even comes with the original envelope which is addressed to "Mr. Ed Mathews" in the hand of Cobb. Includes LOAs from both PSA and JSA and is in NM condition. Prophetic letter to written to Eddie Mathews so early in his career warning him of the evils of alcohol. Ironically, it became a cancer that burdened him all his life and eventually contributed to his death. Obviously, Ty Cobb saw greatness in him from the very beginning based on how early this letter is. As Ty famously said about Eddie Mathews, "I've only known three or four perfect swings in my time. This lad has one of them.”
