1954 New York Giants World Series Press Ticket - Good for Game 1, Willie Mays Catch!
Presented is a 1954 World Series press pass that was good for Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 of the contests between the home team New York Giants and the visiting Cleveland Indians. The Giants swept the Series, and the offered press pass has one ticket-punch hole, so the pass was most likely used for Game 1 of the World Series, the game that featured the over-the-shoulder catch by Willie Mays. The press pass is designed in the shape of a large keyhole, measuring approx. 3.1" at its widest and 4.9" at its highest. On the front of the pass is printed "1954 WORLD SERIES POLO GROUNDS NEW YORK CITY PRESS/Seat No. ___/Games 1-2-6-7-X (ENTER AT PRESS GATE)." The back includes the printed conditions for admission and "Ford C. Frick Commissioner of Baseball." In the top of the 8th Inning of Game 1, the score was 2-2. Giants starter Sal Maglie walked the first batter, Larry Doby, and then Al Rosen singled Doby to second. New York manager Leo Durocher brought in left-hander Don Liddle to face Vic Wertz, Cleveland's lefty batting slugger. On a 2-1 count, Wertz blasted the ball to deep center field. Mays went way back to make a brilliant over-the shoulder catch at approximately a point 420 feet from home plate. Mays' throw to the infield prevented Doby from scoring on a tag-up from second and Doby had to stay at third base. With runners at first and third, Giants reliever Marv Grissom kept the Indians scoreless in the inning. The Giants won the Series opener in extra innings and went on to take the Series in four games. The blue press pass front appears NRMT, but the back has a glue stain. The press pass is a great remembrance of the great Mays ' play, ever since referred to simply as "The Catch," and of the final World's Championship for the New York Giants.
