1954 Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Baseball w/Branch Rickey

This signed baseball has the signatures of three men involved in integrating baseball - Branch Rickey, Clyde Sukeforth, and Curt Roberts. Two of the men were involved with breaking the invisible "color line" in major league baseball. Branch Rickey, as a part owner and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was instrumental in signing Jackie Robinson and eventually bringing him to the majors with the Dodgers in 1947. Rickey's Brooklyn teams won pennants in 1947 and 1949. Before running Brooklyn, Rickey had built the St. Louis Cardinals into a championship team that won six pennants and three World Series. Taking over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the winter of 1950, Rickey built the Pirates' core that won, after he had departed, the 1960 World Series. Clyde Sukeforth was instrumental in scouting Robinson for the Dodgers and recommending him to Rickey. Dave Roberts was signed by Rickey, and the second baseman became the Pirates' first black player in 1954. The baseball is around Excellent, and clean. The signatures average 7/10. Among the 31 signatures are: Rickey (SS), Sukeforth, Roberts, manager Fred Haney, Sid Gordon, Joe Page, Bob Friend, Max Surkont, Walker Cooper, Preston Ward, Bob Skinner, Vern Law, Jerry Lynch, Bob Purkey, Cal Abrams, Sam Jethroe, and many more. A Rickey autograph is tough to find.
