1954 Sports Illustrated #2 CGC 8.0
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Offered is the August 23, 1954, issue of </span><em style="font-size: 10pt;">Sports Illustrated</em><span style="font-size: 10pt;">. This Volume 1, Issue 2 magazine is the second issue in the history of </span><em style="font-size: 10pt;">Sports Illustrated</em><span style="font-size: 10pt;">. Not only does the magazine serve as a time capsule to mid-fifties culture in America, but it also has an insert of 27 facsimile Topps baseball cards of the '54 New York Yankees. The cover of the magazine features "Golf Bags at the Masters", and an explanation of how the "modern" golf bag has pockets for practically everything: foul weather gear, various hats, etc. Featured in this issue is writer Robert Creamer with an article titled "The Yankees Are Still the Team to Beat". Red Smith and Budd Schulberg also contribute articles, and the issue has stories on diverse sports; horse racing, tennis, fishing, and sailing, to name a few. In 1954 and '55, </span><em style="font-size: 10pt;">Sports</em> <em style="font-size: 10pt;">Illustrated</em><span style="font-size: 10pt;"> included facsimile sports cards in some issues, and the 27 cards of the Yankees are both in color and black and white. Some of the cards: Mickey Mantle (HOF), and Gil McDougall in black and white, and Yogi Berra (HOF), Whitey Ford (HOF), Phil Rizzuto (HOF), Hank Bauer, Bill Skowron, and Andy Carey in color. In fact, Mantle signed a contract with Bowman for his baseball card in 1954, so an actual Topps card was not issued for him that season, making the black and white Mantle card in the Sports Illustrated extra </span>special<span style="font-size: 10pt;">. Because of the </span>Yankee<span style="font-size: 10pt;"> </span>facsimile<span style="font-size: 10pt;"> cards, the second issue of Sports Illustrated often is considered even more valuable </span>than<span style="font-size: 10pt;"> the sought after first issue of August 16, 1954. The 8.25" x 11.50" magazine has been encapsulated and graded CGC 8.0. The issue provides a wonderful mid-Twentieth Century look at the sporting world and adds a set of facsimile Yankee cards featuring four Hall of Famers.</span></p>
