1954 Willie Mays Silver Bat
One of the most prestigious trophies in all of baseball is undoubtedly this sterling silver bat, awarded to the Batting Champion each year. Presented is the inimitable genuine article, presented to the Say Hey Kid in 1954 following a sensational MVP season in which he batted .345, capped by a World Series sweep of the Cleveland Indians. Most special is that Mays won the batting title in his debut season back from serving in the army (’52-’53). The New York Giants, who had finished in second & fifth place in the absence of Mays for those 2 seasons, won the pennant with Mays in ’54. Such is the measure of true greatness. Still, perhaps most momentous about Mays’ 1954 season “The Catch”, born out of is his sensational World Series performance. In the 8th inning of Game 1, Willie Mays raced back into deep CF in the Polo Grounds to make a spectacular over-the-head catch of Vic Wertz’s 462-foot drive with the score tied at 2 apiece. If not the greatest catch in history, it is inarguably the most famous. The Giants would go on to get the win, and the sweep! Hillerich & Bradsby 125 silver bat is stamped, “Batting Champion 1954 National League, B.A. 345” on the barrel and “Willie Mays” on the sweet spot. On the butt end of the knob is the tag, “International Sterling AZ 859 L.” You’re looking at the ultimate piece to the Say Hey legacy. EX-MT condition. Comes with a vintage wire photo of Mays holding his MVP awards, including the silver bat. Original caption still attached to verso. This is the original awarded to Mays and later obtained from a family member.
