1955 Nashua "Match Race" Washington Park Trophy (vs. Swaps)

1955 Nashua "Match Race" Washington Park Trophy (vs. Swaps)

One of the great rivalries in thoroughbred racing history is represented in this 1955 trophy celebrating Nashua's victory over rival Swaps. Gold plated trophy is made of sterling silver and weighs just under one pound while standing about 6" tall. Marked on the bottom by Shreve & Co. San Francisco Sterling, the bowl is engraved "Washington Park Swaps-Nashua Match Race" and below is engraved "1955 Won by Nashua, b.c.3,*Nasrullah-Segula, Owner Belair Stud (William Woodward, Jr.,) Trainer James Fitzsimmons, Jockey Edward Arcaro, and $100,000 Purse - 1 ¼ Miles." Nashua was named the 1955 Horse of the Year by virtue of winning the Triple Crown while Swaps competed in only one of those races; the Kentucky Derby, with Nashua capturing a narrow win. The rematch left no doubt as Nashua once again prevailed in earning this wonderful accolade.
