1957 Mickey Mantle Vintage Signed Sport Magazine
Presented is a Mickey Mantle signed and inscribed vintage copy of the March 1957 issue of Sport Magazine. The cover of Sport features the Hall of Fame New York Yankees center fielder still in his youth and at the height of his powers. Mantle is coming off a tremendous 1956 season, and this issue of the magazine hit the newsstands at just about the same time as the Yankees were beginning spring training for the 1957 season. Mantle hit for the Triple Crown in 1956 as he hit 52 home runs, had 130 RBIs and batted .353. In addition, Mantle led the American League in slugging (.705), runs (132) and OPS (1.169). His great season helped the Yankees to the World Championship as they defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers. In that World Series, Mantle had three home runs, four RBIs, six runs and a 1.067 OPS. Mantle also had a great catch in center field that helped Don Larsen to his perfect game in Game 5. In the 1957 season, Mantle's Sport cover was anything but a jinx, and he had another MVP season as pitchers pitched him very carefully, and he led the AL in walks (146) and runs (121). Mantle would go on to help the Yankees to win seven World Series Championships, and he would have his famous 1961 season when he and Roger Maris chased babe Ruth's all-time single season home run record of 60. With 536 homers, Mantle has the most home runs by a switch-hitter in history. The magazine measures 8.5x11", and it has 100 pages. The cover exhibits some tears, minor paper loss, and some crinkling. The back cover shows a few tiny stains. Except for the aforementioned imperfections, the magazine is in good condition. The consignor's family owned and raced Triple Crown winner Affirmed, and they were big Yankees fans and were close to many of the team's superstars. Joe DiMaggio was the best friend of the consignor's Uncle Cecil, and the family's Miami Beach bayfront home was the site of annual cookouts at the Yankees' spring training in Fort Lauderdale. Mantle has signed the magazine cover in blue ink. Using his beautiful script, Mickey has signed and inscribed the magazine in writing: "To Steve My Best Wishes Mickey Mantle." The signed and inscribed March '57 Mantle Sport cover makes a valued remembrance of Mantle, at exactly the peak of his career, between his back-to-back MVP seasons.
