1958 Ty Cobb Signed Check (PSA)
Ty Cobb was the first player ever elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and presented is a 1958 Ty Cobb signed check. The Georgia Peach played from 1905-28 in the Major Leagues, all but the last two of those years (as a Philadelphia Athletic) with the Detroit Tigers. Cobb has a lifetime batting average of .366, the highest in the history of baseball, and he hit over .400 three times and won 12 batting titles. The amazing center fielder at one time held the lifetime Major League hit record (4,189) and the MLB career stolen base record (897). Cobb was certainly a hard charging player who was often combative, but recent evidence indicates that Cobb's reputation for supposed dirty play was a product of unsourced writing. In reality, players of Cobb's era acknowledged that Cobb would slide hard into a base or home plate, as he believed that the right to slide into a base was his to take, but he did not deliberately try to spike opposing players. The presented Cobb signed check is drawn on the Main Office First National Bank of Nevada. All of the handwriting on the check is from Cobb. The check is made out to American Airlines in the amount of two hundred one dollars and 79 cents ($201.79), and the check is dated "5/22/1958." It measures 3x8". "Tyrus R. Cobb" is imprinted on the check, and Cobb has signed the check to match the imprinted name. The check has been encapsulated and certified PSA "AUTHENTIC AUTO." Cobb wrote the cashed check using a fountain pen and his trademark green ink., and the offering makes a great collectible as a remembrance of an immortal, and certainly one of the greatest players in baseball history.
