1960s Jean Beliveau Montreal Canadiens Game Used Stick
"I may not play like Jean Beliveau, I'd like to be the man he is," said Hall of Famer Guy Lefleur about the great Jean Beliveau, Hall of Fame center who played his entire NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens. Offered is a 1960s Jean Beliveau game used signed stick for a left-handed shot. Beliveau was the best player in the Quebec Senior League in 1950-53, but he was reluctant to join the NHL full-time, thinking that he wasn't ready. The Canadiens then purchased the entire Quebec League to obtain the rights to Beliveau. The 6'3" Beliveau was one of the NHL's first big centermen. Although he played briefly from 1950-53, he essentially broke into the NHL as a full-time regular in 1954-55, scoring 37 goals and adding 36 assists for 73 points. Beliveau preferred to play skilled hockey, utilizing his deceptive speed, great stick-handling, and excellent wrist and backhand shots, but opponents kept roughing him up, so in the next season, 1955-56, Beliveau retaliated with rough play of his own, going from 58 penalty minutes in 1954-55, to 143 penalty minutes in 1955-56. He scored 47 goals with 41 assists, led the league in scoring to win the Ross Trophy, won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP, and led the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup winning season. Known in French as "Le Gros Bill (Big Bill), Beliveau wound up as a part of 10 Montreal Canadien Stanley Cup winners, and he was the team's Captain for ten seasons. He added a second Hart Trophy in 1964-65 and won the inaugural Conn Smythe Award, as the NHL Playoff MVP, in 1964-65. The left-handed shot finished his career with 507 goals, 712 assists, and 1,219 points. The Beliveau game used stick is a fine example, with original tape on the butt end and on the blade, with a small bit of the top tape worn away from use. The blade is signed by Beliveau, in large, neatly flowing script, in gold colored marker. The CCM Custom Pro stick has "Beliveau 4" stamped on the shaft. Also stamped on the shaft is McNiece's Montreal, Can. McNiece's was the sporting goods store that supplied the Canadiens with sticks at the time. Beliveau was one of the most beloved Montreal Canadiens of all-time, with his outstanding character, leadership and extensive charity work earning him great respect and popularity, and a Beliveau game used, signed stick is a valued addition to any sports collection.
