1961 Hank Greenberg Signed Judaica Letter
Hank Greenberg, the greatest Jewish hitter of all time, never wore his religion on his sleeve though he became a cause celebre for refusing to play in a World Series game on the Jewish high holy day - influencing the greatest Jewish pitcher of all time, Sandy Koufax, to do the same years later. Hank also made it a point to quietly contribute to Jewish causes. In this handwritten letter on his personal stationery, dated October 25, 1961 -- when he was part-owner of the White Sox but living at 993 Park Avenue in New York -- he writes to an official of the United Jewish Appeal of Chicago enclosing a $1000 check, and apologizes, “I have other charitable commitments here in New York which limit my contribution.” Signed, “Sincerely, Hank Greenberg.” Letter in Greenberg’s left-handed writing is composed in blue-green ink with the signature grading NRMT, as is the 7.25 x 10” letter with 2 horizontal fold marks.
