1961 Roger Maris 61st Home Run Game Ticket

1961 Roger Maris 61st Home Run Game Ticket

Historic rare ticket stub from October 1, 1961, where Maris hit his record-breaking 61st home run. In 1961, both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were on a pace to challenge Babe Ruth's all time single season record of 60 home runs. Because Mantle had been on the Yankees long before Maris, Mantle had more rooters than Maris. Plus, Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick, who had been a friend and ghostwriter for Ruth, ruled that any player had to break Ruth's record within the previous standard season schedule of 154 games (not the new 162 game season) for the record to be fullly recognized. (Frick's edict about requiring Maris to break Ruth's mark within 154 games was mostly ignored and Maris was widely recognized as the new home run champion.) Mantle missed the end of the season because of an infected hip, and Maris broke Ruth's record on the final day of the season when he homered to right field in the fourth inning off Boston Red Sox starter Tracy Stallard. Despite the game being Maris' last chance at the record, only 23,154 fans attended the game, and at the time many did not customarily save ticket stubs, so this torn, game used stub is a rarity. For a lower box seat, reads, "Sun. Oct. 1, 1961." Also printed on ticket is "Game No. 81."
