1961 Roger Maris Record-Breaking 61st Home Run Season Ticket Stub PSA GD 2

1961 Roger Maris Record-Breaking 61st Home Run Season Ticket Stub PSA GD 2

The ball sailed into the rightfield seats at Yankee Stadium, and Roger Maris had done it - actually hit his 61st home run in a season, breaking Babe Ruth's record. Presented is a ticket stub from that 1-0 New York Yankee win against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees had long since clinched the American League pennant and the crowd was there to see Maris break the record, or for some traditionalists, to see Maris stopped at 60, tied with the Babe. Of course, Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick, once a friend of Babe Ruth, and Ruth's ghostwriter, had decreed in that summer that if Ruth's record were broken it would receive an asterisk if it were not accomplished within 154 games baseball's long-time regular season total, not the expanded 162 games in 1961. But 61 homers in a season would still be the most in one season. And a baseball committee on historical accuracy ruled in 1991 that the record would stand alone without any asterisk. In the record-setting game, Maris flew out to left field in Inning 1. He next came to bat against Boston starter Tracy Stallard in Inning 4. After the count went to 2-0, the crowd began to boo, as they wanted Maris to get a pitch to hit. He did. On the next offering, a waist high fastball, Maris swung. Television announcer Red Barber immediately said just, "There it is!" as the ball flew to right field. It landed in the seats about 10 rows up, near the Yankee bullpen. Sal Durante, a 19-year-old fan, got the ball and later in the game was brought to the Yankee clubhouse, and Durante wanted to give the ball to Maris. The generous slugger told the young fan, "Keep it. Make some money on it." The historic ticket stub has been encapsulated and graded by PSA Good 2.
