1967 Jackie Robinson Signed Contract Page
Many publishing companies tried to get Jackie to write his autobiography, and this 2nd and last page of a Macmillan contract dated February 27, 1967 and signed by Jackie on March 2nd seemed to be a feather in editor Peter Ritner's cap. However, for reasons unknown, Jackie nixed the deal and would not pen his memoirs until 1972 when he wrote the best-selling "I Never Had It Made" for GP Putnam's Sons, telling of living in "a different kind of slavery than the kind Mr. Lincoln struck down." Robinson's NRMT signature appears on the line under "Agreed to and accepted", with Ritner's signature as Executive Editor above under "The Macmillan Company". 8 1/4 x 11" page EX-MT with 2 light fold marks. First page missing. From the Robinson Family Archives.
