1969 Belmont Stakes Arts and Letters "Victory" Race-Worn Horseshoes Display
<p>Set of four horseshoes worn by Arts and Letters during his historic 1969 victory in the prestigious Belmont Stakes. These shoes represent a significant piece of racing history, as they were worn by a Hall of Fame horse during the most celebrated victory of his career. The horseshoes have been mounted upon a wooden plaque that features a metallic silver-colored plate in the center. The oval plate features the likeness of a horse head in relief, below which is an engraving that reads "Victory Racing Plates/Worn By/'Arts and Letters'/Winner of the/Belmont Stakes/June 7th, 1969/Owner: Rokeby Stable/Trainer: Elliott Burch." This plaque originates from Hall of Fame trainer Elliott Burch, who trained Arts and Letters for the entirety of his career. Arts and Letters finished a close second to Majestic Prince in both the 1969 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. In the Belmont, however, Arts and Letters proved to be the better horse, finishing 5 1/2 lengths in front of Majestic Prince to deny him the coveted Triple Crown. While Majestic Prince never raced again, Arts and Letters used the Belmont Stakes as a spring board for a spectacular finish to the year, which included a win in The Travers, and earned him being named American Horse of the Year at season's end. In 1994 Arts and Letters was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The wooden plaque (15x21") displays moderate wear, including chipping along the borders, light scratches, and minor tarnishing to the metallic plate. </p>
