1969 Rolling Stones at Altamont Original Negatives
The Altamont Free Music Festival is a rock concert the world will never forget. In the overwhelmingly positive wake of Woodstock, this music fest was the brainchild of the seminal rock act The Rolling Stones, and held on Saturday, December 6th, 1969. Featuring the likes of the Stones, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jefferson Airplane, and Carlos Santana, the show was intended to build upon what rock achieved with Woodstock and continue in its tradition. Unfortunately, the Stones miscalculated when they brought in the infamous Hell's Angels to work security, whose violent presence resulted in a homicide and contributed to three accidental deaths. The aftermath of this event helped usher out the love revolution of the 60's and, along with other well-documented tragedies such as the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr. and increasing tension over Vietnam, would bring the United States into a more cynical era. This set of 183 35mm and eight medium format negatives documents the events of that day. Taken by noted photographer Walt Lynott, these photos are high-quality shots of the Rolling Stones' performance from that concert, and depict the band and the chaotic crowd around them. A great collection of images from a day in which rock and roll was forever changed.
