1970-71 Chicago Blackhawks Clarence S. Campbell Trophy

1970-71 Chicago Blackhawks Clarence S. Campbell Trophy

Displayed is a smaller version of the NHL's 1970-71 Clarence S. Campbell Trophy. This smaller version was awarded to team members and officials only - in this case to Lou Varga, the assistant trainer of the Chicago Black Hawks. Clarence Campbell was the president of the National Hockey League from 1946-47 through 1976-77. In 1968, the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl was an award initiated to honor Campbell, and the award was given to the NHL's Western Division regular season champions from 1967-68 through 1973-74. The Campbell Trophy was also given for the following team achievements: The Campbell Conference regular seasons champions (1974-78); the Campbell Conference Play-Off Champions (1981-93); the Western Conference Play-Off Champions (1993-2020 and 2021-present). In 2020-21, because of scheduling changed because of the pandemic, the NHL playoffs were restructured, and the Montreal Canadiens won the Campbell Trophy as the Black Hawks had a 49-20-9 regular season record to win the West Division regular season. In the playoffs, the Black Hawks made the Stanley Cup finals, losing 4-3 in games to the Montreal Canadiens. The Black Hawks were led on offense by Hall of Famers Bobby Hull, with 44 goals and 96 points, and Stan Mikita, with 24 goals and 72 points. Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito had a 2.27 GAA. The trophy is a smaller version of the full-sized Campbell Trophy, and this individual trophy measures 11" in height, with the first three inches of the trophy being a wooden base beneath the 8" metal bowl. The six-sided base is 4" in diameter, and the trophy weighs 34.5 ounces. On one side of the trophy is engraved "CLARENCE S. CAMPBELL BOWL/1968." On the other side of the trophy is engraved "CHICAGO BLACK HAWK HOCKEY TEAM, INC/1970-71/LOUIS VARGA (ASST. TRAINER)." The trophy is in excellent condition, and it provides a fine memento for a star-studded Chicago Black Hawks team.
