1971-72 Chicago Black Hawks Clarence Campbell Bowl Trophy

1971-72 Chicago Black Hawks Clarence Campbell Bowl Trophy

Displayed is an individualized version of the 1971-72 NHL's Clarence S. Campbell Bowl that was presented to the Chicago Black Hawks' trainer, Louis Varga. Clarence Campbell was a former President of the NHL, and the Campbell Bowl was presented from 1967-74 to the regular season champion of the NHL's West Division. Later, the Campbell Trophy was awarded to the Campbell Conference Regular Season champion (1974-81), the Campbell Conference Playoff champion (1981-93), and the West Conference Playoff Champions (1993-2020). In 2020-21, the Covid-19 pandemic caused an unusual play-off situation, and the bowl was awarded to the Montreal Canadiens. From 2021-present, the Campbell Trophy is given to the West Conference Play-off Champions. Chicago had a regular season record of 46-17-15 when they won the Campbell Bowl in 1971-72. Hall of Fame left wing Bobby Hull led the Black Hawks in scoring that season with 50 goals and 43 assists for 93 points. Center Pit Martin had 24 goals and 51 assists for 75 points, Dennis Hull had 30 goals and 39 assists for 69 points and Hall of Fame center Stan Mikita collected 26 goals and 39 assists for 65 points. Hall of Fame goalie Tony Esposito had a 31-10-6 record for a GAA of only 1.75. The cup stands 10.75" tall. The six-sided faux wooden base measures 4.5" across at its widest points. The base is 3.25" tall. Engraved on the bowl is "Clarence S. Campbell Bowl 1968." On the opposite side of the bowl is engraved "Chicago Blackhawk 1971-72 Louis Varga Trainer". The reason for the disparity between the two aforementioned dates is that the bowl was first awarded in 1968, and in 1971-72 the Chicago Black Hawks won the bowl. The bottom section of the metal top part of the trophy has a diameter of approx. 2.75". The bowl weighs 35.1 ounces. These individual smaller versions of the actual Campbell Bowl were presented to players and to others associated with the team, such as trainers. The bowl shows just a bit of tarnishing, but overall is in EXCELLENT condition.
