1971 Belmont Park The Governor Stakes "Farewell Party" Sterling Silver Winner's Ice Bucket

1971 Belmont Park The Governor Stakes "Farewell Party" Sterling Silver Winner's Ice Bucket

Sterling silver ice bucket, with removable lid, awarded to the owners of Farewell Party for his victory in the 1971 Governor Stakes held at Belmont Park in New York. The two-handled ice bucket bears the following engraving on the front: "New York Racing Association/The Governor/Belmont Park/1971/Won by/Rokeby Stables/Farewell Party/Trainer E. Burch." This is a rare horseracing award, as the Governor Stakes was run only between the years 1969 and 1975. Farewell Party was the sole three-year-old entered in the Governors Stakes in 1971 and with odds of 17-1, he paid off handsomely for his backers that day. The victory also marked the first stakes win of his career. His trainer, Elliot Burch, was later inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1980. The ice bowl is marked "Sterling" on both the underside of the lid and the underside of the bowl. Aside from moderate tarnishing, the bowl remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Base diameter: 5.5 inches. Height (with lid): 10.25 inches. Weight (with lid, and including insulation liner): 78.75 ounces.
