1971 Dave Boswell Baltimore Orioles Tour of Japan Watch

1971 Dave Boswell Baltimore Orioles Tour of Japan Watch

Presented is a 1971 Dave Boswell Baltimore Oriolesa Tour of Japan watch. Boswell was a right-handed pitcher who had eight seasons in the Major Leagues: Minnesota Twins (1964-1970), Detroit Tigers (1971) and Baltimore Orioles (1971). Boswell started in the Major Leagues with the Minnesota Twins when he was only 19 years old. He won 20 games in 1969, for the Twins. Then, in a playoff game in 1970, he hurt his pitching arm in throwing a slider to Frank Robinson. "It felt like my shoulder went right into my jawbone," said Boswell years later. His arm never fully recovered. Boswell played with Detroit in 1971 and was released, and then he signed later that season with Baltimore, going 1-2, with a 4.66 ERA. The Baltimore Orioles won the American League pennant in 1971, for their third pennant in a row. They had won the World Series, against the Cincinnati Reds, in 1970, but lost the World Series in 1969 (to the New York Mets) and in '71 (to the Pittsburgh Pirates). In the Orioles' Japan tour, Baltimore went 12-4-2. Elrod Hendricks had the highest Orioles batting average on the trip, batting .400. Boog Powell batted .397 and led the team in home runs with six. Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson both had 3-0 records for the Orioles. Japanese legend Sadaharu Oh batted only .111 against the Americans during tour games, but he hit three home runs. Because of his arm woes, it is probable that Dave Boswell decided to pass up the tour, and he never again was well enough to pitch in the Major Leagues. The offered watch is a Bulova. On the face of the watch is, "1971 3 straight Al Champions/Astronaut/Mark II." The front of the watch also has an Orioles logo. On the back is engraved "D. Boswell" and "Bulova." The back of the watch also reads, 'Stainless Steel Case." The watch has a diameter of approx. 1.3". The watch does not run, but it is visually in excellent condition.
