1972 Saratoga The Travers "Key to the Mint" Sterling Silver Winner's Trophy
Sterling silver trophy cup, with removable lid, awarded to the owners of Key To The Mint for his victory in the Travers Stakes held at Saratoga Race Course on September 19, 1972. The two-handled cup is engraved "New York Racing Association" in large lettering along the top portion. The engraving below reads "The Travers/Saratoga/1972/Won By/Rokeby Stables/Key To The Mint/Trainer Elliot Burch." The Travers Stakes was one of six major wins recorded by Key To The Mint in 1972, which helped earn him the 1972 Eclipse Award for American Champion Three-Year-Old-Male Horse. His trainer, Elliot Burch, was later inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1980. The trophy is marked "Sterling" on both the underside of the lid and the underside of the cup. There are two very small dents on the reverse of the cup that do not detract in the least from its Excellent to Mint appearance. Base diameter: 4.25 inches. Height (with lid): 10.5 inches. Weight 9with lid): 32.125 ounces.
