1973 Roberto Clemente Medal Mint in Original Box
Commemorative Clemente medal was one of a mere 200,000 authorized to be minted under special legislation enacted by the Congress and signed by President Nixon on May 14, 1973, a year and a half following Clemente's tragic death. Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce to memorialize Clemente and aid his humanitarian causes, the medal designed by sculptor Virgil Cantini shows Roberto's profile on the obverse beside baseball-like seams. Reverse has multiple balls crashing through a symbolic barrier, for Clemente's explosive impact on and off the field. Medal is NRMT comes in the original clasp box (VG) with plastic mounts and an explanatory pamphlet.
