1973 Secretariat Man o' War Stakes Race Worn Shoe - Sourced from Lucien Laurin (Chris McCarron LOA)
With his dominant performance in the Triple Crown behind him, Secretariat continued his run into thoroughbred legend throughout the 1973 season. Offered here is a Secretariat race worn shoe from the 1973 Man o' War Stakes on October 8 at Belmont Raceway, the sight of his most memorable triumph. This was Secretariat's last race on US soil. It was also his last win in the US with his time breaking the course record for the turf and stakes record. Purchased by Hall of Famer Chris McCarron in the late 1990s at a Secretariat 25th Anniversary charity auction, this shoe comes with a signed LOA by McCarron as well as an LOA which states that Lucien Laurin donated the shoes for the auction. Not only did he win, but at the time, Secretariat's set a world record for this race, and Big Red would compete in only one race thereafter, retiring with victories in 16 of his 21 starts. In 1999, Blood Horse magazine ranked Secretariat as the second greatest thoroughbred of all time, behind only Man o' War The LOA shows two shoes on a wood plaque, but only one shoe is being offered here.
