1973 Triple Crown Framed Collage
When Secretariat swept the 1973 Triple Crown with his record-breaking victories, he transcended the sport to be a hero to the nation. And perhaps his greatest fan was none other than his owner Penny Chenery. This unusual, yet simply framed horizontal montage from Ms. Chenery’s personal collection dates back to the “Camelot” era of Meadow Stable in the early ‘70s and was displayed in a place of honor in her home. While Ms. Chenery owned and could have chosen fancier or more sophisticated framed art over the years, this particular piece evoked such special sentiment that it hung near her bed where she could see it each morning when she arose. The collage features Secretariat as he approached the finish in each of the Triple Crown races -- the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes -- as well as a fourth composite image of the famed trio of trophies from each race presented as silver and gold spoils from these classic victories. The photos are set off by a Meadow blue matting and have captions of the official time for each race (including the original Preakness time of 1:54 2/5, which would later be officially changed to 1:53 in 2012). The layout also displays Secretariat's royal lineage of Bold Ruler - Somethingroyal - by Princequillo, along with his Meadow Stable connections representing the ninth Triple Crown winner. The esteemed framed piece measures 19" x 38.5" in total and has been officially catalogued in the Secretariat/Meadow Stable Archive Registry. It comes with its own individual letter of authenticity from the Chenery/Tweedy family.
