1977 Pele Cosmos Game Worn Jersey And Photos
Muhammad Ali and a crowd of 75,646 showed up at the Meadowlands to bid farewell to a legend. The greatest soccer player in history was in his final game as a player with the New York Cosmos versus his former Brazilian team, Santos. One of the most spectacular Pele worn jersey’s ever offered, this handsome piece has the Pele legend all over it. Manufactured in England by Umbro International, this green and white jersey (the letters “EX” are hand-written in front of the word “Large” ) has Pele’s own number 10 sewn on the front and back and sleeve. The name Pele is sewn on the back. Since this jersey saw a lot of game action, the yellow sweat stains on the front are understandable. Two b&w photographs are included, both taken at Pele’s final New York Cosmos match. One shows Pele standing in front of the lineup with his Cosmos teammates. The second photo shows Pele being mobbed by the press, as well as Cosmos security personnel as he is being escorted off the field. In these photos Pele is wearing his number 10 jersey, but not the one offered here. According to Sheri Garay, the wife of Pele’s good friend and manager Pedro Garay, Pele wore this shirt in the first half of his final game and then gave this shirt to her late husband. The photos were taken after the game, at this time Pele put on another jersey for the award ceremony. We are still doing research as of this catalogue going to press. Note: A game worn Pele jersey was auctioned for over $220,000 in 2002.
