1978 Ozzie Smith Major League Debut Ticket Stub PSA VG 3 (Pop 2 - None Higher)

The baseball Odyssey of Ozzie Smith ended in triumph when the "Wizard of Oz" was enshrined in Cooperstown's Hall of Fame on July 28, 2002. But where and when did it begin at the major league level? It was Opening Day, Friday April 7, 1978 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco where the Giants hosted the visitors from San Diego. Presented is a ticket stub for a lower stand box for the Giants' season opener. Ozzie was in the starting line-up for the Padres, batting eighth and playing shortstop. San Diego won the game, 3-2. Smith fielded flawlessly. As a hitter, Smith grounded out and walked before he left for a pinch hitter in the sixth. Ozzie played four seasons with San Diego and 15 with the St. Louis Cardinals, retiring after the 1996 season with 2.460 hits and a career batting average of .262. He won the Silver Slugger Award for shortstops in 1987 with a .303 average. Defensively, he was phenomenal. The 15-time All-Star won 13 Gold Gloves. Ozzie led the NL 8-times in assists, 5-times in double plays by a shortstop, and 6-times in range factor. Lifetime, he stole 580 bases. The ticket stub makes a nice memento of the start of a fabulous career. The ticket stub has been graded and encapsulated by PSA VG 3.
