1980-81 Dave Maloney Game Worn New York Rangers Jersey
The youngest player ever to play for the Broadway Blueshirts when the 18-year-old defenseman came up in 1974 (after being a first round draft pick), Maloney wore this fabulous jersey the first half of the 1980-81 season when he donned the prestigious “C” on the shirt as the youngest captain in team history, and the youngest of all the captains in the NHL at the time. The aggressive (to say the least, once racking up 33 penalty minutes in a game) Maloney was actually a tri-captain with Barry Beck and Walt Tkaczuk, yet only he of the 3 wore the “C.” Unfortunately, he had to relinquish the honor on December 7, 1980, when injuries took him off the ice for too long. (He would later wear the letter again, symbolically, in his last games as a Ranger in the ‘85 Patrick Division playoff series against the Islanders when Barry Beck was injured. He then finished up his career with the Sabres for one season). The letter “C” that means everything in hockey is stitched onto the left shoulder of the classic blue mesh shirt in the same red on white tackle twill that comprises the diagonal “Rangers” across the front, “Maloney” on verso and “26” on back and both shoulders. “Gerry Cosby” tag on inside collar with size “52” and laundry instructions tags. Jersey shows moderate wear (two team repairs, board and stick burns) but the general crumpling and loose threads attest to Maloney’s rock-ribbed style of play. A real keeper off the back of one of the Garden’s all-time faves. It is believed that this jersey was only worn during the time he was Captain (since it still bears the ‘C) that season and he kept it as a souvenir.
