1984 Tony Gwynn Silver Bat
Awesome silver bat is an exact duplicate of the one awarded to Tony Gwynn after his 1st of 8 NL batting titles, when the "Mr. Machine" of hitting racked up a .351 average in '84. Though this was a mere appetizer considering some of Gwynn's subsequent averages -- .370 in '87 (highest in the league since Musial's .376 in '48), .394 in the strike-shortened '94 season (highest since Bill Terry's .406 in '41) and .372 in '97 (at age 37) -- the award marked the coming of the best pure hitter the game had seen in decades, and one who'd rack up 3,000 hits faster than anyone save for Cobb and Nap Lajoie. Next year's sure-fire HOFer had a .338 career mark. An appropriate award for a bat-man like Gwynn, the 34" Louisville Slugger Gwynn model shines with distinction and is engraved on the barrel "Batting Champion 1984, National League, B.A. 351. NRMT with just a few scattered, unobtrusive nicks.
