1986 De-Lish-Us Civil War Scenes Archive
In 1986, through a joint effort between of Jim & Sue Nicewander (‘The Card Coach’) and De-lish-us Potato Chip Co. of Wisconsin, a beautiful set commemorating the famous events and battles of the American Civil War was produced. 1986 marked the 125th anniversary of the American Civil War, and this set of 36 full color cards was produced to honor the memory of all those who fought so nobly for their beliefs. Card fronts feature an artist’s rendering of a scene from an important battle or a notable event that occurred between 1861 and 1865, along with a card featuring legendary leaders Grant and Lee as the last card in the set. Card backs have an extensive description of what is depicted on the front of the card along with Civil War trivia. These cards were at first only available in specially marked boxes of De-lish-us Potato Chips (one card per box), then later in complete (but limited) set form. This extensive collection details the complete history of the development of this issue. Included are: - 30/36 of the original color negatives used to produce each card, along with pristine cards; - a complete blank-backed set of 36, along with the original mockup of each card’s back; - a second, complete set (pristine) of 36 cards; - a pictorial and written history of the evolution of the set – historical notes, original card work ups, ideas on what to include/exclude, contact letters to De-lish-us (and Kellogg’s!) regarding royalties and marketing ideas, storyboards, original advertising flyers Overall, hundreds of documents detailing the development of this very interesting set, from first ideas to the finished product. A fitting product to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Civil War! The Card Coach also tried producing a ‘Prehistoric Animals’ set (c. 1985), marketed to both Gardner’s and Kellogg’s. While it does not seem those efforts ever came to fruition, all the preliminary workups are included here, along with images of the proposed 18 cards in the set. An interesting bonus!
