1987 and 1991 Canada Cup Team Trophies
The 1987 Canada Cup marked Mario Lemieux's final ascent to true superstar. He was paired on a line with Gretzky. Both were at the heights of their talents and the games of this series are perhaps without peer in skill level and excitement. This team was so loaded with talent that the list of some who didn't make it is almost absurd. Among them were Roy, Yzerman, Neely and Clark. Canada met the Soviets in a best of three finals. With 1:26 remaining in the third and final game Lemieux converted a Gretzky pass for a 6-5 Canada Cup-winning victory. Trophy stands 12" high and is 6" wide at its widest point. The 1991 Canadian team was without Lemieux, Bourque, Yzerman, Sakic, Roy and Neely, for various reasons. What they did have was Gretzky and Messier. They beat the USA in the final game despite the loss of Gretzky. The trophy is 10" tall including the solid painted bronze "puck" base. Red felt underneath it with manufacturer's decal. Both trophies belonged to team massage therapist Juergen Merz and are in Near Mint condition.
