19th Century Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Horse Racing Theme Issues (20+ Archival Portfolio)

19th Century Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Horse Racing Theme Issues (20+ Archival Portfolio)

Extremely scarce, and mostly in NM-MT condition, these 20 historically significant weekly issues are unmarked and complete. Frank Leslie’s newspaper was a competitor of Harper’s Weekly and the two were important in furnishing the public with news and sports of the day. The editions span the years 1866 through 1894 and include a number of full-page, cover, and centerfold illustrations with articles on leading racetracks, horses, and jockeys of that era. Several photographic images are included and accompany illustrations by noted artists. The subjects run the gamut from the beginnings of Jerome Park, beautiful scenes of Saratoga races, Monmouth Park, and the 1894 race of the year.
