2001 Barry Bonds 55th Home Run Baseball
From the Montreal Gazette, August 25, 2001: "If Barry Bonds does hit more than 70 homers this season, the ball with which he hit home run number No. 55 will probably be worth much more than the $300 a fan offered for it on the spot Thursday night. The fan who made the catch on Bonds's pinch-hit homer in the right-field bleachers was Al Beaubien, who by day is the starter at Beaconsfield Golf Club. He turned down the offer." He didn't turn down a later offer though, and his handwritten LOA dated February 15, 2002 on his personal letterhead acknowledges the ball's sale and provenance. Also included is Monsieur Beaubien's ticket for the game, a "Foul Ball Club Member" certificate issued by the Expos noting that he had caught a ball hit by Bary (sic) Bonds on "23/8/01," and even Beaubien's parking ticket for that day. We've also got a letter confirming the provenance from the Expos. We wouldn't believe the story any more if we had caught the ball ourselves. What some may not have realized though, was that this Official Major League baseball, showing nice use from its long flight, took Bonds to a career total of 549 and gave him sole ownership of the number eight spot of all time (beating Mike Schmidt with 548). So many reasons to love this piece--why pick just one?
