931 Hack Wilson Signed Check PSA NM 7
Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson was a 5'6", 195 lb. Hall of Fame outfielder who was a power hitter who once challenged the single-season home run record of 60 held by the much larger Babe Ruth. Presented is a 1931 Wilson signed check. Wilson played 12 seasons of baseball, all in the National League from 1923-34, with time spent with the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. He greatest season was 1930 when he made a run at Ruth's home run record, with Wilson blasting 56 home runs, a National League record for 68 years. In that same 1930 campaign, Hack hit .356 and had 191 RBIs, still the most for any season in Major League history. Wilson led the NL four times in home runs. Wilson was not unfamiliar with alcohol, and his prodigious use of it was a large factor in the diminishment of his baseball skills as he reached the halfway point in his career. Wilson and Jimmie Foxx are thought to have been a combined model for the baseball manager that Tom Hanks played in the film A League of their Own. The check is written on the Hamilton State Bank of Chicago, Illinois in the amount of $50.00 (fifty dollars). The check is made out to R.H. Wilson, most likely Hack's only son, Robert Wilson.
