Abner Doubleday Signed Handwritten Letter

Abner Doubleday Signed Handwritten Letter

The myth that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in 1839 has endured for over a century, making the did-he-or-didn't-he issue irrevelant since his name is soldered to the fiber of the game. A good Doubelday signature is hard to find, but a very fine one appears on this letter dated May 23, 1885 from the general's New York residence to a Connecticut man who'd requested his autograph. Written in black fountan pen and signed "Yours truly, Abner Doubelday, Major General," the signature is a very strong 9. The letter on brown, two-way lined paper is EX with some incidental soiling.
