One of the greatest rivalries in racing history would have to be Affirmed and Alydar. They raced each other 10 times, from June 15, 1977, in the Youthful at Belmont, to August 19, 1978, in the Travers at Saratoga. Affirmed won seven of these matches including thrilling duels in all three Triple Crown races. The intensity of the competition is captured in this head-on b&w shot of the horses rumbling down the stretch at the '78 Belmont Stakes, whip-wielding Stevie Cauthen on Affirmed just inches ahead of Laffit Pincay Jr. on Alydar. 14 x 18" photo NRMT and mounted under glass in a 20 x 24" silver frame.
